Bean & Grain Power Bowl Base

This bowl base is one of the most versatile things in my kitchen. It's what I reach for when I want something filling, plant-based, and adaptable to whatever vegetables or toppings I have on hand.

🌿 Plant-Forward ✦ Whole Ingredients 💛 Nourishing
🥣

"I started making this bowl base on Sundays as part of my weekly routine, and it transformed how my whole family eats during the week. What I noticed is that having a ready base takes the decision-making out of meal times."

"What worked for me was treating this as truly a canvas — some days it's Mexican-inspired with salsa and cilantro, other days it's Mediterranean with cucumber and tzatziki. The base stays the same; what changes is the mood."

🌿 Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown rice, quinoa, or farro (uncooked)
  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans or chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans or white beans
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Toppings: avocado, roasted vegetables, fresh greens, salsa, yogurt, seeds

✦ How I Prepare It

  1. Cook grains according to package directions. For extra flavor, use vegetable broth instead of water.
  2. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Add drained beans and spices. Stir to coat and cook for 5–7 minutes until beans are warmed and slightly caramelized.
  4. Season to taste. The beans should have a slightly crispy exterior.
  5. Assemble bowls: grains first, then seasoned beans, then your choice of toppings.
  6. This base stores separately for up to 4 days — assemble fresh each time.
